ESKİ TANRILAR (OLD GODS)
Podron is a multilingual pod-theatre project produced by Anadolu Kültür, its name derived from the words "podcast" and the Armenian word for theatre, tadron. The project brings together artists to perform plays by Armenian playwrights, some preserved only in archives, others staged more recently in Istanbul, in both Turkish and Armenian. Conceived as a new-generation radio theatre, Podron carries texts produced across different periods from the Ottoman era to the Republic into the digital world, contributing to an expanding body of scholarship that reveals how Armenian theatre artists enriched the theatrical landscape of both the Ottoman and Republican periods, a history largely overlooked in Turkish theatre historiography.
Ayşe Draz adapted the text Eski Tanrılar (Old Gods) by Levon Şant in collaboration with Özlem Hemiş for a radio play and directed the production. The project was supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Institut Français, with archival materials accessed through the Hagop Ayvaz Collection at the Hrant Dink Foundation.
Alongside the play recordings in Turkish and Armenian, the project shares information about significant figures and spaces in Armenian theatre history, as well as theatre terminology through the #podronsözlük series, available on the Podron Instagram account and Anadolu Kültür's website and social media channels.
