Originally written and staged by Tekand in 1994–95 as the founding work of her performative staging and acting method, the play was reconceived and restaged as Becoming a Rhinoceros 2.014 on the occasion of Studio Players' 25th anniversary. Rewritten and re-presented as a high-rhythm contemporary comedy, the production brought together an ensemble of over sixty performers.
The work's theatrical language is exacting: acting refined of all literary residue, oriented entirely toward the live present, demanding comic precision, physical mastery, and the kind of wit shared between a clown and an acrobat. The stage is structured through a system of play-areas that map the hierarchies and realms of existence the piece explores.
